Interesting bark, and I've noticed that phenomenon on other trees I've seen in the past. Startling in a way, isn't it. . .just doesn't seem "natural."
Let call it the bear scratching tree then!
I saw a tree similar to this on the grounds of the Hermosa Inn. At first I thought the tree was wound with hundreds of twinkle lights but upon closer inspection, I saw that it had these little nodules all over the trunk.
This is quite interesting. I wonder what it's called. Well, I kind of like the name that Stefan suggested.
So interesting. Never seen this before.
