Continuing with my little series on biodiversity, here is a photo of a tree that has what appears to be barnacles on its truck. I don't know the type of tree this is or why it has this adaptation. In North America, it might be to discourage bears from climbing the tree, but we don't have bears in Costa Rica. We have sloths and monkeys that climb trees. This would make an ideal tree for a bear to scratch his back.
This week we are showing photos of the Spanish colonial architecture of Grenada, Nicaragua on our Viva la Voyage travel photo site.

Interesting bark, and I've noticed that phenomenon on other trees I've seen in the past. Startling in a way, isn't it. . .just doesn't seem "natural."
Let call it the bear scratching tree then!
I saw a tree similar to this on the grounds of the Hermosa Inn. At first I thought the tree was wound with hundreds of twinkle lights but upon closer inspection, I saw that it had these little nodules all over the trunk.
This is quite interesting. I wonder what it's called. Well, I kind of like the name that Stefan suggested.
So interesting. Never seen this before.
Those are really weird.
Just been catching up Dave, really enjoyed your 'biodiversity' series, some seriously weird and wonderful images from your part of the world.
