This is the church in Guaitil, a small village. In the foreground is part of the football (soccer) field, which is in the main square of typical Costa Rican villages.
Guatiil is an artists village, with about 100 families making pottery in the same style and techniques as the Chorotega pre-Columbian culture. The artists' families welcome visitors to watch them as they shape the pottery, fire the pottery in dome shaped outdoor ovens, and paint the pottery.
Guaitil is located just east of Santa Cruz, which is about 30 minutes southeast of Tamarindo. It is a popular stop for tourist vans on the way back to Tamaindo after wildlife viewing boat excursions in the area. I will post additional photos about Guaitil and its pottery in the future.
very pretty picture! thank you for sharing the info.
ReplyDeleteglad you liked the pictures of mumbai on my blog. thank you for your visit and comment.
It looks so peaceful...The brilliant thing about photo blogs is that the image and story behind it has the power to inspire one to travel to place s/he never dreamt possible. Looking forward to more images from your corner of the globe...
ReplyDeleteOoh, I hope you'll post some of the pottery! I love pottery, and none of that fine porcelain stuff for me! ;)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photo David and I second Hilda - pottery photos!!!! LOL
ReplyDeleteHilda and Lady Jicky,
ReplyDeleteThank you for expressing an interest in photos of the pottery. I plan first to show some photos of the people making the pottery, then show the finished product.
I will show the pictures a few days or about a week apart, as I am in the beginning stages of this Daily Photo site and I think most people expect outdoor pictures of Costa Rica. I would not want to have too many pictures of a comparatively narrow subject this early in building an audience for the site. I had no idea that there would be such interest in pottery.
I think you will like the pottery photos when I post them before too long. Especially you, Hilda, since you said that you do not like fine porcelain. Do not worry; the pre-Columbian tradition of Guatil pottery is not at all like Lladro porcelain or Hummel figurines. Yes, they are all ceramics, but the comparison stops there, similar to saying that a Caravaggio and a Picasso are both paintings. The Guatil pottery features earth tones and pictures of native animals.
