"Poor man's umbrella" leaf detail

Yesterday's photo of the lake in the crater of Irazu Volcano showed a poor man's umbrella plant in the foreground. Here is a close-up of one of the leaves. The leaves are large, often about 75 cm. (2 ft.) across. They are strong and could keep smaller plants or animals dry from the rain. I will show another photo of plants with huge leaves in a couple of days.

  1. These look to be very strong leaves, David. I suppose they must be if they act as umbrellas. Do you know the Latin name?

I've left a response to your wonderful tale on Monte Carlo DP - and a question...

  2. I am sorry that I do not know the scientific Latin name for the poor man's umbrella plant. I could not find the plant in my book for Costa Rica plants and I do not know more information about it.

  3. I don't think I saw one of these plants when I visited. It looks pretty sturdy.

  4. Wow, these are really interesting. I saw something like this at least in size in Maui on road to Hana.

  5. So I am visiting Costa Rica, and we have been doing alot of hiking on our own. I now have something very similar to poison oak on my face! A tico here said it could be from this plant, but i have not been able to find anything about it being poisonous. It was the only plant I picked up though. Just wondering! jill
