Termite mound in the tree

I like to post animal photos on this website, but not insects.  I am not a fan of insects, and my wife is really creeped out by them.  On a long walk along the beach for miles south of Playa Langosta, I walked along the edge of the forest, then ventured into the forest to follow a group of howler monkeys, then looked up and saw this massive termite nest up in a tree.

  1. They are amazing creatures, aren't they. Those little buggers have created much havoc in homes of my friends in Mexico.

Why do they build in trees and why is it that they don't destroy the tree? That nest looks like a giant hornet's nest!

  2. Insects are fascinating animals but they need to keep a distance (especially spiders!) :-)
I remember these mounds so well.

  3. I don't remember ever seeing one of these mounds in a tree before. Do they eat live wood or only the dired out pieces? I wonder.

  5. Termites...not exactly house friendly. But look what a robust home they've built for themselves.

  6. Ugh! We just had the termite inspector who found no termites...he said, however, that developers who come in and take out the trees before building houses make a mess of things for the termites live in the trees and when there are no trees they head for the houses.

Fortunately, we're pretty much in a forest!
