Pelicans flying in "V" formation

While walking along the beach, it is easy to be preoccupied with the waves, sand, vegetation and wildlife along the beach and to miss the view of what is flying overhead. Here is a flock of pelicans flying in a classic "V" formation that I saw on the same hike down the beach that I have been showing during the past week.

Tomorrow, I will show the first of several photos of a problem that confronted us as we neared the completion of our return.

If you have not done so already this week, please come take a look at the photos of Portugal that we are featuring on our Viva la Voyage travel photo site.

  1. What fun to see these birds overhead. It makes me wonder if they were silent or noisy like the geese that fly over my house from time to time.

  2. Sharon,
The pelicans are silent as the fly overhead, so they sometimes can be unnoticed. We will see them occasionally diving for food in the ocean.

  3. Whenever I see that classic V formation, I think about fall, migration, and approaching winter. Appparently it isn't true for that flock of birds. Do you know anything you can share about their habits?

  4. I like the delicate trace of that V in the big blue sky. The pelicans are transformed in flight.

  7. I would love to see the pelicans, we get geese here and they fly in formation but make a lot of noise, you can here them coming long before you see them!

  8. I can't imagine a problem walking along this beautiful beach! Unless deciding whether to: sit and watch the waves, jog for a bit, look for seashells, or take a swim. I'll be watching tomorrow.

  9. it is lovely to watch the V formation flying across the sky, on their way to where, maybe just for the joy of flying together.

  10. How fascinating. I love pelicans and remember a very tame one that wandered around in Cairns.

Today, Dave, there is something for you and Julie and Glenda on Monte Carlo!
