The addition of direct flights from the USA to Liberia about a decade ago has transformed the northwest Pacific region of Costa Rica. Our area is the most popular destination for tourists in Costa Rica, a country known for its tourism industry. Major international hotel chains, such as the Four Seasons, J.W. Marriott, Hilton, etc. have opened resorts. Lots of vacation homes and condos have been built. All of this is made possible by the fact that it is just one hour from the Liberia airport to the beach resorts.
These airport terminal buildings, shown today from the window of an airliner, are very basic. The terminal is functional, but not impressive. We will explore this subject a little further in the next few days.
This week we are showing photos of San Pedro de Atacama, the main town in the Atacama desert of northern Chile, on our Viva la Voyage travel photo site.
I much prefer these smaller airports!
ReplyDeleteI wonder if the airport is an unmixed blessing for the area. Yes, it brings in tourists, but with the increased traffic goes disturbance to the traditional ways. Is the benefit for the travelers or for the natives???
ReplyDeleteI can remember when the Phoenix airport looked more like that. There was a place where you could park at the end of the runway and the plane would take off right over you.
ReplyDeleteI remember this very well. I remember when we arrived it seemed like it was a big empty barn. When we left there was a lot more activity.
ReplyDeleteNot the best memories of waiting under that big shed to get through customs and immigration or perspiring in the crowded, cramped waiting area, but I'm glad it opened the northwest of the country to visitors. When does the new terminal open?
ReplyDeleteThey could use some updating in the waiting area. Although it has been quite a while since i was there.
ReplyDeleteIt's a bit on the spartan side, but it looks nice, nonetheless. The runway looks good, and the grass growing out there gives the place an adventurous feeling! Well, if things are working in order there, then that's all that matters.
