I took this photo on Langosta beach, which absorbs the full force of the ocean's waves. Tamarindo beach is partly sheltered by a bay with a reef and an island for protection.
The trick of getting this action photo was to pick a spot on the beach where I could shoot the crashing waves beside me, looking down the beach, not just pointing my camera out to sea, without getting wet myself. I did not use my little waterproof camera, but my Nikon D90 and lens. I took advantage of a little point on Langosta beach where you can walk out onto a higher point of sand while the waves break on each side of you, usually without covering the higher spot.
We have photos of the Atacama Desert of northern Chile on our Viva la Voyage travel photo site this week. It is an amazing, colorful, barren landscape.

Great action on the surf. I can almost hear it.
You got a great crashing shot here! Mother nature in full action!
I wouldn't mind getting in on that action.
Great shot Dave, sounds like you had to get yourself in a tight little spot to catch this image, the things we do hey!!You didn't need the surfer, this is very dynamic on it's own!
Great shot, would love to hear the sound this makes!
Wooaaaah, love it!

Good splash picture. Difficult to shoot.
Greetings,
Filip
You done good! Super photo. And I'm glad that you didn't get wet. I am not so lucky. People often tell me that I'm all wet!
Fantastic shot!

Best wishes to your son and his new bride. She must be something if she has parents who tango -- Wow!
