The Magpie Jay Takes a Bite

Yes, the magpie jay that landed at the table next to us did help himself to some leftovers of the breakfast fruit.
This photo shows his long tail and the distinctive top not on his head.

Blue jays in the USA are known for robbing the food of others.  It is interesting that their cousins in Central America share this same trait.

As I have mentioned before, tiny Costa Rica, which is the size of West Virginia or Switzerland, has more species of birds than the USA and Canada combined.  One of my guidebooks describes it as Nirvana for birders.

Today is Sunday, so we have photos new photos posted on our Viva la Voyage travel photo site.  This week we are showing some photos from our recent trip to Papua New Guinea.

I would have to agree with that nirvana statement. I saw so many wonderful birds while I was there.

What great fun.

Re your comment on Ocala: How can you say Florida is low-lying? Maybe South Florida where most places are only 10 feet above sea-level, but here in Ocala we're 100 feet above sea-level. That's why we're on top of the world. (Our world, that is!) :-)

We have to admire jays. They fearlessly go out and get what they want.

Some years ago a ranger told us that Monteverde National Park itself has more species of birds than the US. We will check on that in about 60 days.
