Of course, he would probably say that he meant to do this. He perhaps was tired of riding that wave and wanted to cut short the ride and head back out for a better wave.

Looking at this and the shot before Dave, he looks like he might know what he's doing there, that's a pretty cool move, well captured.
And he was doing so well in the last shot.
