Maybe the underground location of the museum, besides creating space for a plaza above ground, was also considered a good design for security reasons. Art thieves can't break in or out of windows if there are no windows.

I think it is wonderful that art work and artifacts are considered so valuable that a vault is necessary.
Those are certainly some secure looking doors!
Once they shut those big vault doors, I think everything is safe. I like those gleaming floors.
Looks like a very special place; and not only is configured against thieves but I'd guess the temperature is more conducive to protecting the various pieces of art.
These museums are wonderful and I find it interesting that they are underground!
