Sails against the sunset

The daily afternoon catamaran sailing excursions return to Tamarindo at sunset.  The people on the boat enjoy viewing the sunset from the water.  They provide an appealing scene for the people on Tamarindo beach to enjoy the sunset with a sailboat to accent the horizon.

I apologize that I have not been able to post every day recently. I will need to post when I can.  I have been very busy at work in Arizona and I also have been having some issues with the computer on which my photos are stored.

Today is Sunday, so we have new photos posted on our Viva la Voyage travel photo site.  This week we are showing photos of Antigua, Guatemala.

A last glimpse of a sunset

I usually show glorious sunsets with color that fills the sky.  After the sun sets, there is still a sliver of color.

This is a long exposure from the balcony of our Langosta condo.  The dead tree in the foreground is reflecting lights from the windows of the condos in our building.  There is even the hint of a wave that is reflecting a little light.

Today is Sunday, so we have new photos posted on our Viva la Voyage travel photo site.  This week we are showing photos of the festival in Punahka, Bhutan.  We travelled all the way to the Himalayas to see it, as well as other sights in Bhutan.

A perfect sunset on a perfect beach

At low tide the gentle slope of Tamarindo beach is so gradual that a reflection shot is possible in the ocean at sunset.

I took this photo in the souther end of the bay, which is sheltered by an island and reef, so the waves are gentle here.  San Francisco Point is on the left.

Today is Sunday, so we have new posted on our Viva la Voyage travel photo site.  This week we are showing photos from our cruise along the east coast of Baja California, with some samples of the marine life in the Sea of Cortez.

Ocean sunset

Just like it is pleasant to look down on the beach and ocean from our Langosta condo balcony/patio, the sunset views over the ocean are even more relaxing.

Even on days when there is not much color in the sunset, there can be delicate highlighting from the sunset that is a serene way to end the day.

A metaphor about the sky and soccer

The symbolism in this photo may be a stretch, but I had to find something to accompany a few observations about Costa Rica's glorious World Cup Football (soccer) team.

The country was justifiably excited and very proud.  Although the team lost in an overtime shoot-out on Saturday, the crowds in the streets in San Jose nevertheless celebrated after the game.  People were proud of the team and the country, even if the remarkable winning streak had come to an end.

So, today's photo is not a typical sunset beach-and-ocean shot, of which I have posted many.  This photo shows a mixture of foreboding skies, yet there is glorious beauty, and reflection brings tranquility.  Perhaps that is how people view Costa Rica's World Cup team.

This week we are showing some underwater photos from the Sea of Cortez on our Viva la Voyage travel photo site, including several photos of sea lions swimming underwater with us.

San Jose Sunset

I took this photo from the same place as the photo I posted yesterday.  Yesterday's photo was early in the sunset, and I waited for a late sunset view across the roofline for this photo.

We get spoiled with vibrant, stunning sunsets on the beach in Tamarindo, but apparently they have good sunsets in San Jose as well.

This week we are showing photos of the Perito Moreno Glacier in Patagonia, Argentina, on our Viva la Voyage travel photo site.

The last slice of the sun

I always watch for the green flash after the last slice of the sun disappears, but I have never seen it, although Julie has, just once.

Sunset behind San Francisco Point

Yesterday's photo showed San Francisco Point at the southern end of Tamarindo Bay, so I decided to walk a little south so I could align the sunset with the point.  A few people standing on the point were obviously enjoying the sunset view as well.

Watching the sunset from the water

This family enjoying the surf at the end of the day obviously took a few moments to enjoy the sunset.

Sails against the sunset

Yesterday's photo of Tamarindo bay showed a sail against the horizon.  That gave me an opportunity to move to where I could use my zoom to set up a chance to align the sailboat against the setting sun to add a little variety and interest to the sunset photo.

This is the daily afternoon snorkel and sunset sail that is a popular activity for tourists.

This week on our Viva la Voyage travel photo site we are showing photos of one of the most remarkable buildings in the world, the Mezquita Cathedral - Mosque in Cordova, Spain.

Sunset, before the sun drops

Sunset is my favorite part of the day, and it is perhaps overused as a subject for photographers, particularly on my site, I confess.  But the variety of sunsets presents irresistible photo opportunities.

I will show a few photos during the next several days to try to add variety and creativity to the ways to photograph the setting sun in Tamarindo.

Theme Day: "height" -- Gyrocopter silhouetted against the clouds

Today's worldwide Daily Photo theme is "height."  If you look closely in this photo, you will see the silhouette of the gyrocopter against the clouds catching the setting rays of the sun.

The gyrocopter is similar to an ultralight aircraft, but is a helicopter rather than a plane.  The pilot flies the plane for tourists who sit in an open air cockpit and enjoy the scenery.  This is the way to view the Tamarindo area from high up.  My son has taken this flight and loved it.  I have not done it, but I think I will some day.

This week we have photos featuring the cathedral and street scenes of Grenada, Nicaragua, on our Viva la Voyage travel photo site.

Sunset over Tamarindo Bay

I usually show photos of the sunset from Tamarindo or Langosta beaches, but every once in a while we like to go up to the heights above Tamarindo and watch the sunset from there.

This is a view of Tamarindo bay, with San Francisco Point at the southern end of the bay, and Playa Langosta around the point to the left.

This was high tide, as Capitan Island is barely visible in the middle of this photo.  The island and a reef shelters the southern end of the bay.  You can see some of the boats in the sheltered part of the bay.

This week we have photos featuring the cathedral and street scenes of Grenada, Nicaragua, on our Viva la Voyage travel photo site.

A surfer heading in at sunset

This is a more traditional scene at the end of the day at Tamarindo than the bicyclists I showed yesterday or the bride and groom the days before.

I guess this surfer was too tired from day of surfing to carry the surfboard home, and decided to drag it along the beach instead.

Today is Sunday, so we are showing new photos on our Viva la Voyage travel photo site.  This week we are featuring the cathedral and street scenes of Grenada, Nicaragua.

Bicyclists on the beach at sunset

Some people use Tamarindo Beach as the main street for the town.  And why not?  It is more pleasant to walk down the beach than down the street.

I don't think I would ride a bicycle on the beach, however.  I would think that sand would get on the chains and sprockets.

This week we are showing photos of Ronda, Spain, a charming town perched on the edge of a gorge, posted on our Viva la Voyage travel photo site.

Theme Day: The Sun as a Street Light

Today's worldwide Daily Photo theme is street lights.  I have taken liberties with the theme because the street lights in Tamarindo are not photogenic.  Tamarindo is a small resort town, but it does not have a lot of urban infrastructure.  In fact, there are only a few paved streets.

The focal point of Tamarindo is the beach.  The sun each evening drops into the Pacific like a huge street light, so I am using this photo for the street light theme.

When I think of street lights, I think of my late father talking about how when he was a young child his father had a rule that he had to be in before the street lights came on.  And my father also remembered the beating he received the one time he disregarded the rule.

This week we are showing photos from Cabra Castle, a castle-hotel northwest of Dublin Ireland, on our Viva la Voyage travel photo site.

The last moment of the sun

Yesterday I showed a beachfront house. If you stay on the beachfront, this is what you can see just about every evening.  I like to observe the last moments of the sun.

I took this photo of the sun dropping into the Pacific from our Langosta condo.

We have photos of the charming town of Adare, Ireland, posted on our Viva la Voyage travel photo site this week.

Exuberant sunset paddle boarders

It looks like the paddle boarder on the right was celebrating the moment.  Maybe it was the beauty of the sunset.  Maybe they had just learned how to paddle board.  Maybe it was just the end of yet another glorious day in paradise.

This week we have photos of Blarney Castle, Ireland, posted on our Viva la Voyage travel photo site.

Sunset surfer flailing away to keep his balance

Yep.  He is a beginner, all right.  One arm is pointing up and the other is pointing across his body.

Maybe he would say he was not flailing away to keep his balance.  He was just trying to signal to someone on shore that he will meet them for dinner at 9:00.

Either that or he was flashing semaphore signals while surfing.

This week we have photos of the wild animals of Tanzania posted on our Viva la Voyage travel photo site.

Beginning surfer at sunset

This surfer does look like a beginner, based on his arms positioned way out to the side to keep his balance.   Let's see how he does in tomorrow's photo.
