Hillside homes

Here is another photo of homes in the hillside above Tamarindo, with expansive views of the bay and ocean.

The government got smart a few years ago.  The adopted a progressive element to property taxes, so there is a higher rate of property taxes on homes and condos that cost more than $250,000.

I think that makes sense and is fair, even though we have to pay the higher tax on both of our condos.  The extra revenue is collected from a lot of foreigners, as Costa Rica is very popular with Canadians and Americans for vacation and retirement homes.

This week we have more photos of Julie's raft trip through the Grand Canyon on our Viva la Voyage travel photo site.

Good move, but don't the rich get richer and the poor gets poorer despite whatever policies !

I like the way they are stair-stepped up the mountain with plenty of lush foliage to separate them.

Awesome place for a home or condo!

Once they start permitting some rich folks to build big homes on the hillside, it is hard to stop. Before long, a beautiful natural wooded hillside is lost and it is another hillside with ego houses on it.

I think that México should adopt a similar policy; right now the low taxes that foreigners pay on their homes, both modest and high-end, are obscenely low. Many whom I have met brag about their low taxes, but I'd be ashamed to admit it. Different people different values.

I thin a 2-tier system of taxation is sensible. I also think that there should be zoning laws to keep building from going out-of-control.
