After yesterday's post with news about new species of orchids, I got out my external hard drive to show an orchid photo. I took this photo in one of the greenhouses at the Lankester Botanical Gardens outside San Jose in the Central Valley.The climate in the Central Valley and mountainous areas of Costa Rica is different and more conducive to orchids than in our Guanacaste region of northwest Costa Rica. We have a long dry season from November through April. There are some wild orchids in shady areas near streams in Guanacaste, but they do not grow in the wild near the beach.

Lovely! I just bought one of these but it's a mini variety, it's really tiny and so cute.
Will you think me strange if I say I've never been crazy about orchids? I can see the beauty but they're just too complicated for me. ;)
