San Jose cemetery statuary

This is a photo of some of the graves within the suburban San Jose cemetery that I encountered on my walk.

Costa Rica is obviously a very Roman Catholic country.  Each year as many as one million people make a pilgrimage to the cathedral in Cartago during a holy week in August.  That is about one-fourth of the country's population.

This week we are showing photos from our recent trip to the Galapagos Islands on our Viva la Voyage travel photo site.

I often visit both churches and cemeteries when I visit other parts of our country or other countries because they tell you a great deal about the culture and customs. This looks like a very full cemetery with many visits from family.

Not quite as elaborate as Recoleta but, still very interesting.

Someone has lovingly decorated this grave.
